How to apply discounts to a subscription in CornerSpot

Discounts reduce what a subscription's recurring charges add up to. Cornerspot lets you apply them at two levels on the new-subscription form: a per-line discount on an individual line item, and a subscription-level discount across the whole subscription. Both draw from your reusable discount catalog and flow onto every invoice the subscription generates. This guide shows you how to add each one.

Where discounts come from

Discounts are picked from your discount-definition catalog. Each one is either percentage-based (shown as a %, e.g. “New Client 10%”) or a fixed amount (shown as a $ figure, e.g. “Loyalty Credit ($25)”). You set these up once in your billing settings, then reuse them anywhere. Note that discounts — like line items and taxes — can only be set while you're creating the subscription.

How to apply discounts to a subscription

Start a new subscription, choose the customer, and add the line items you're billing for.

1. Open the New Subscription form

From the dashboard, select Subscriptions in the left-hand menu (under Members & Billing), then click New Subscription.

2. Add the line item you want to discount

Choose the Customer, then click Add line item and pick a product (or add a custom line) with its quantity and unit price. Discounts apply to what your line items charge, so add them first.

3. Add a per-line discount

Open the line's Taxes & discounts section, then use the + Add discount picker to choose a discount from your catalog. The line's total drops to reflect it, and a discount chip appears on the row.

4. Add a subscription-level discount

Scroll to the Subscription-level discounts section and use its + Add discount picker. As the form notes, a subscription-level discount is “Applied to the subscription's post-line-discount subtotal” — so it comes off after any per-line discounts.

5. Check the totals

Both discounts reduce the running totals on the form (the subtotal and total contract value). When you create the subscription, the same discounts carry onto its period total and onto every invoice it generates.

Good to know

  • Two levels: per-line discounts come off individual line items; subscription-level discounts come off the post-line-discount subtotal across the whole subscription.
  • Percentage vs fixed: percentage discounts are shown as a % and scale with the amount; fixed discounts are shown as a $ figure.
  • Set at creation only: discounts (like line items and taxes) can only be added while creating the subscription. To change them later, cancel the subscription and create a new one.
  • Flows onto invoices: the discounts you choose are snapshotted onto the subscription and applied to every invoice it generates.

Tips

  • Maintain your discount catalog in billing settings so the right discounts are ready to pick on every subscription.
  • Attach default discounts to a product and they'll pre-fill on the line when you add that product.
  • Use a per-line discount when only one product is discounted; use a subscription-level discount for an across-the-board reduction.
